To make a prototype of an F-1 car can be very challenging. But, a year of rigorous hard work turned the dream of 12 young students of the JSS Academy of Technical Education into reality. It had everything required to execute a project i.e. planning, design, marketing, engineering and manufacturing.
“The Agni racing team was formed after the college management approved our project. Our objective was to make a mark at the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers at which students from across the globe develop a small Formula-style race car,’’ said team leader Bharath Nagaraj.
“From analysis to managing car parts, everything was done by students. We looked for material on the internet, checked out books and spoke to the faculty members as well as subject experts,’’ he said.
Creativity and thinking out of the box were great tools for preliminary designs, Bharath added. The team developed a cost model, a production plan and a sales plan. The main motive of the competition was to see how well the car would do in the market.
The Agni car weighs around 300kg, has a Honda CBR 600 F4I engine, and an ignition control box. It can achieve a speed of 100km in less than 3.4 seconds with independent suspension and brakes. “We participated in the static events at the Formula SAE in Michigan. We got good reviews and bagged the 95th position among 120 colleges worldwide. It’s a matter of pride for us that a college from India, that too from Bangalore, made it into a big event,” said Reshma Babu Reddy, another team member.

vtualerts INDIA THE “NEW” LAND OF OPPORTUNITY
• India ranks 4th in the world in terms of the number of scientists and engineers available.
• India produces approx 15000 PhD’s on annual basis.
• India is 3rd in the world for producing scientific journal publications per gross domestic product
(GDP). The other beings US & China.
• Approx 15 Indian companies are listed on NASDAQ – which is perhaps amongst the top 5
countries other than US companies.
• John. F. Welch once said, GE gets the highest intellectual capital per dollar here in India.
• Indian scientist Narinder Singh Kapany is called the “Father of optics” whose research on the glass
fiber with cladding lead to the invention of Optical fiber.
• Radio was originally invented in India by JC Bose but he never patented it.
• Molecular biophysics was developed in India.
• The revolutionary 2000$ passenger dream car was developed by Tata Motors an Indian company
who also has approx 37 patents filed for their design and technology.
• India’s first software product success- Zoho has been acknowledged as a better application than
the Google docs.
• GE has selected India as one of its important Innovation hubs for designing low cost technologies
and its latest aero engine was designed here.
• Indian company- Sloka created a base station for telecom towers that are 10 times cheaper than
traditional technologies available elsewhere.
• Intel’s breakthrough Xeon 7400 series microprocessor was completely developed in India.
• Microsoft Indian R&D unit has filed more than 800 patents.
• More than 100 global Fortune 500 companies have set up their R&D units in India amongst whom
few are focusing on creating next generation technologies ,some of whom are -Motorola, GE,

Lightweight personal hovercraft built by VTU students! Solution to bad roads in India?
November 27th, 2009
vtualerts Is this answer to potholed roads in India! A personalized hovercraft, built by students from ACHARYA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY. Cheaper than Nano!
Kudos to these brilliant engineers.

Report by Dhananjay :
A group of students Dhananjay ,Pradeep, Deepak, Rakesh.N, Nanda 8th sem of Mechanical Dept from ACHARYA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY have designed and fabricated a one seater HOVERCRAFT with the kind co-operation of our Principal Dr.G.P.Prabhukumar and under the guidance of Dr D.Madhu Former Head of the dept , R.Shadakshari, Nagaprasad.K.S. A hover craft is a amphibian vehicle which can run on both land and water. This craft has been built purely by the students .Basically it works with a cushion of air ejected from an annular ring beneath it without any contact with the land or water over which it travels.
The engine used is a Yezdi Roadking 2-stroke 250cc 16 bhp. The lift that is achieved is about 1ft from the ground. The added features would be a coat of resin reinforced by glass fibres throughout the body of the craft which gives the craft added strength and also makes its water proof and fire resistance as well. It took about 3 weeks round the clock work to complete this project but about 2 months to gather enough information and data to insure the path to be followed to complete the craft. The problems faced were initially they had a 2 blade propeller which broke as its tip went beyond the speed of sound. Since there were not many propeller manufacturers in India they had to get a new multi blade fan imported from U.S and had to assemble it ourselves using just a manual provided.
The most important to factor is its price. The entire project has worked out to be roughly about Rs 60,000 including the rework.

vtualerts Young engineers invent a little red wonder – Bangalore

Cars, these days, seem to have reached their point of evolution. At first glance, it may seem like a regular Maruti 800, but appearances can deceive.
A group of four students from Sapthagiri College of Engineering have developed a hybrid car as part of their final-year project. Behind the wheel are Suraj Kumar B S, Srikanta B J, Nagarjun V and Naveen Kumar M, all students of mechanical engineering.
So what makes this hybrid car so special? It runs on two engines, unlike regular models, which have only one. Consequently, there is a remarkable reduction in fuel consumption. The hybrid car conforms to fuel emission norms.
