Submit correct info on faculty and college, or risk Rs 5L fine

VTU cautious after learning that a failed student was teaching other BE students

State varsities are taking the lead in having dubious faculty on board. While one member of the RGUHS faculty is aged ‘two’, some teachers of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) are teaching engineering students even without a degree to their name.

As a rule, only a candidate with a masters in engineering can teach students pursuing the bachelor’s course. Recently, VTU received a petition from a student alleging that one teacher had not even completed the BE course. “When we asked the college, they said they had merely accepted whatever had been submitted by the candidate. Many colleges do not have a clue about the background of their faculty. We have decided to do a thorough check,” said S A Kori, registrar, VTU.

The varsity has sought information pertaining to affiliation (temporary/permanent), faculty information, library and labs. The information will be used for various purposes, including submission to the government/AICTE/UGC, preparation of reports, constitution of various committees, etc. Kori added that if colleges failed to give information, they can be charged under various sections of the law and slapped with a penalty of up to Rs 5 lakh.
